REVIEW - Living Naturally Botanic Hair Oil*

Living Naturally Botanic Hair Oil

The winter months can be equally harsh on our hair as our skin. Cold weather, wind and central heating, coupled with my usual heat styling and bleaching are a recipe for dry, frizzy strands. In the past I've used just about every hair mask, serum and cream on the market, but so many hair brands test on animals, so finding an effective treatment becomes a bit more of a challenge when you're living cruelty free.

Vegan Triple Chocolate Brownies

I mentioned in my last post that moving in to our new place has really inspired me to do more cooking, and when I spotted the recipe for these triple chocolate brownies in the newest edition of Vegan Life magazine I was practically drooling on my iPad, so these were the obvious choice for my next culinary experiment.

Sgaia Foods

We're in! We moved! We're no longer surrounded by boxes! And I have to say it feels pretty great. Our new house has completely changed the way our day-to-day lives function. We have a sofa and a TV in the kitchen now which sees us spending a lot more time in there than the living room as we previously did.

Having a much bigger kitchen has even inspired me to do a bit of cooking. Plus, Andrew works in retail and those Christmas shifts aren't leaving him with much time to experiment in the culinary department.

Vegan & Vegetarian Supplements and a tasty curry recipe!*

Vertese vegan supplements

As any vegan will tell you, as soon as you stop consuming animal products, everyone around you suddenly becomes a nutritionist. "Where do you get your protein / iron / vitamin X Y Z?" The truth is, if you're careful to get enough variety into your diet, a vegan lifestyle can provide 99% of the essential vitamins and minerals needed - the only one which is a bit more difficult is Vitamin B12. Whilst I drink plant milks fortified with B12, I always like to 'top up' with a vegan supplement.

Hello, it's me

Me, my grandad, my cousins and my baby sister. Check out my bob!
It's been almost two months since I posted. Logging in to Blogger this morning I actually felt anxious, like there might be a popup shouting, "where on EARTH have you been?" When I'm in full-on blogging mode I put so much work into posts - setting up photography, uploading and editing photos, drafting a post, editing, scheduling, social media, not to mention the money I - all of us who blog - spend to keep content exciting and interesting. When I have to take time away I feel so guilty, and I feel like I owe you an explanation.
I don't tend to get too personal on here so, here it is, personal post alert.

VEGAN TOON - The Bohemian

The Bohemian Newcastle Vegetarian Vegan Restaurant

After a quick stop off at our friend's leaving do, on Friday night, Andrew and I headed to Newcastle's newest vegan and vegetarian restaurant, The Bohemian.

Situated on Pink Lane, just near Central Station, the building itself was one I'd eaten in many times before, having been the Stateside Diner in a previous life.

5 brands you thought were cruelty free, but aren't

Yesterday I read a really interesting article in the Telegraph about brands which are commonly thought of as 'natural' which are actually packed full of mineral oils, parabens and other nasties. Often, beauty brands will try and hide behind their branding to appear 'better' than they are, and the same can be said when it comes to animal testing.

Some brands are less than forthcoming with their animal testing policies - this is usually because they don't want to admit that they test. Unfortunately, this reluctance and the confusing semantics that come with it, make it pretty difficult to decipher those who test from those who don't.

The Vegan Kind Subscription Box September 2015 - TVK23

The Vegan Kind September 2015 TVK23

I'd read a lot of mixed reviews about this month's Vegan Kind box. Unfortunately I was a bit late getting mine this month since we were in Berlin, so by the time we got back home it had gone to the Post Office depot. No matter how hard I tried, it was impossible to avoid spoilers on Twitter, Instagram and Bloglovin', so I ended up just caving and reading reviews before I'd opened my box. Damn you, tempting social media! Here's what I made of it all.

Berlin Beauty - Douglas Naturals Cleansing Foam

Douglas Naturals Cleansing Foam

After much denial, I have finally accepted that my beloved Kat Von D Tattoo Eyeliner is running low. So before we headed to Berlin, I had a quick Google to find out if there's a Sephora store where I could stock up. I was pretty surprised to find out there isn't a Sephora in Berlin (but thankfully my sister is travelling the US during September so perhaps I'll strike lucky!)

Google reliably informed me that Berlin's answer to Sephora is a store called Douglas - not quite as well stocked as the almighty S, but still impressive enough to make me waste spend half an hour browsing. We visited the store in Mitte on Unter Den Linden which was over two floors and packed by the most helpful, multi-lingual staff I've ever encountered. Score one for Douglas.

We went to Berlin! (Super-long post alert!)

Brandenburg Gate

So it's been a whole month since I blogged. I really needed that month. A month to just concentrate on life and on all of the stuff offline that's been going on. There's been a lot of it. August was hard. I felt like I was forcing myself to blog because I felt like I had to, despite the fact I had a million and one other things going on in my mind and in my heart which were pulling me in other directions.

I took a minute and remembered why I started this blog; because I love to try new things and I love to write. I felt like blogging had become an inconvenience and a chore; something I felt I had to do, rather than wanted to do. I'd put too much pressure on myself at a time when my attention and energy was better focused elsewhere. So that's what I did. And now I'm back from a blogging break, back from a trip to Berlin, and really ready to get back into blogging again. I'm happy to be back.

REVIEW - Native Unearthed Natural Deodorant*

Native Unearthed Natural Deodorant

Since I went vegan I have been wanting to try a mineral, "crystal" deodorant, and I've yet to find one that's sparked my interest enough to purchase (I know, deodorant's never going to be the most thrilling thing to buy, but these things interest me, okay?!)

The lovely folks at the Vegan Lifestyle Association asked me if I wanted to give this natural deodorant by Native Unearthed a go and I watched the postbox like a hawk until it arrived.

REVIEW - PHB Ethical Beauty Skin Brighten Gel*

PHB Ethical Beauty Skin Brighten Gel

From time to time the very lovely people at the Vegan Lifestyle Association and the brands they work with ask if I would like to give a product a go.

A little while back I got the opportunity to try something by PHB Ethical Beauty, a company creating natural, organic cosmetics which are both vegan and cruelty free. The brand itself really impressed me. All of the products are handmade with natural ingredients which are designed to benefit your skin as well as the environment. Aside from being vegan and cruelty free, the products are all palm oil free, and they donate 15% of the profits from sales to charity.

The Vegan Kind Subscription Box July 2015 - #TVK21

The Vegan Kind TVK21

This month's Vegan Kind box is dead good. I didn't blog about last month's (and I'm usually pretty religious when posting about these because I really like them), but looking back at last month's I realised the box just wasn't doing much for me and that's why I hadn't posted about it.

There was a root vegetable thing and I hate root vegetables (parsnips + beetroot = nonononono) and there was a bar of soap thing which I wasn't overly thrilled about... ANYWAY. It was very much a case of last month's box just not lining up with my personal preferences, not that there was anything wrong with the box or the products in it, they just weren't my thing. Hey, it happens.

MOVING ON to July's box, TVK21, which is packed to the rafters with excellent stuff.

REVIEW - Eden Perfumes

Eden Perfumes

One of the cosmetics I always struggled with when I switched to cruelty free was fragrances. I used to work at The Perfume Shop (shout out to my spritzer girls!) so I know that many of the high street fragrances are owned by companies that test on animals and some brands still use animal derived ingredients in their perfumes.

I'd heard lots of good things about Eden Perfumes but was a bit reluctant to buy perfume on the Internet in case it was rubbish when it turned up! But everywhere I went Eden's name kept popping up so I took it as a sign to check the brand out.

Ethical Superstore Haul!*

Olive Branch Cinnamon Biscuits

For many vegans, becoming a vegan extends beyond simply not eating animal products into caring about what you eat, what you buy and the companies you support with your hard earned pennies. When you're on a budget or having a super-busy week it can be difficult to shop ethically 100% of the time, but thankfully there are sites like EthicalSuperstore.com which make shopping with a conscience a smidge easier.

When the folks at Ethical Superstore asked me if I'd like to try some goodies from their extensive - and I mean extensive - range of vegan-friendly products, I jumped at the chance. A few days later, this is what arrived on my doorstep...

As much as I love a bit of sunshine, when it comes to holidays, I'm all about the city break. Andrew and I visited Glasgow last summer and made the trip to Paris a few years before that, but for a while now we've had our hearts set on visiting Berlin.

Post-best friend's wedding I had the blues. Big time. I'd been looking forward to my bestie coming back from Canada and super-hyped to be part of her big day, so when it was over there was a big, fun-shaped hole in my life. So we decided to fill it by finally booking our trip to Berlin!

Vegan fitness with Bounce Energy Balls*

Bounce Energy Balls cashew & pecan and spirulina & ginseng

It was just over a year ago now that I properly started on my fitness journey. Since switching to a plant-based diet and taking up regular exercise, I have slimmed down from a size 14-16 to a size 10, gone from 'obese' to 'nomal' on the BMI scale and lost almost three stone.

Now I've met - and surpassed - my 'goal' weight, I've got my sights set on the next marker. It's funny how unachievable a goal can seem when you first set it and how euphoric you feel when you finally see that coveted number show up on the scales or slip into that pair of skinny jeans.

The Vegan Kind Beauty Box May 2015

The Vegan Kind Beauty Box May 2015

Oh hi, have you missed me? This month has been crazy. With work and weddings and one thing after another, I literally haven't had a minute to sit down at this computer and just. Write.

I started this blog because I love to write and I love to try new things, and whilst I was trying all the new things, I had no time to tell anyone about them (other than my long-suffering fiance) so this post and the ones which will follow now everything's a bit calmer, is long overdue. Sorry. Thanks for sticking with me <3

Aside from the monthly box which I love so much, The Vegan Kind also offers a quarterly beauty box which ships in February, May, August and November. I quite like that the box is only every quarter as it gives you time to really use the contents before another box comes along. This is also good for my beauty drawers which are bursting at the seams.

Anyway, read on to see what was in May's box, TVKBeauty Box 3, and click here if you want to read all about what was in the last box back in February.

Vegan Tuck Box Subscription Box*

Vegan Tuck Box review

If you've been reading Tea on the Tyne for a while, you'll know I'm a big fan of a subscription box (you can read all my previous subscription box posts here). Last year when I first went vegan they really helped me find new brands and goodies which were vegan-friendly when I had no clue, and even now it's rare that a subscription box will contain something I've already tried.

Honestly when subscription box time rolls around it feels like vegan Christmas in our house. So when the lovely people at the Vegan Tuck Box asked me if I wanted to give one of their subscription boxes a try it was a total no-brainer.

The five best things about being a vegan

Being a vegan is absolutely brilliant. Ask any of us. That's why people think vegans are preachy, we're not, we just think being a vegan is the absolute BEST and want to share it with everybody we come into contact with. We realise that doesn't always make us popular.

But there are some things people just don't know about living a vegan lifestyle, so here are - what I think are - the five best things about being a vegan.

Flowbox - Maxi Vegan Box February 2015

Maxi vegan Flowbox review

Before I went vegan I wasn't a huge fan of subscription boxes. I'd tried a Birchbox once and I liked it but I wasn't blown away enough to continue my membership past box one.

Once I became vegan I started looking for easy ways to discover new products and spotted The Vegan Kind on Facebook. It fit the bill from my very first box and I've been a subscriber ever since.

I love my TVK box, every month when it lands on my doorstep it's like Christmas as I unpack the contents and discover new products I might not have ever heard of otherwise. Obviously I would like this excitement to continue every day of my life, so I had a look around to see if there were any other vegan subscription boxes on the market, when someone told me about Flowbox.
