REVIEW - Taking The Pea coated crunchy pea snacks*

Taking the Pea coated crunchy pea snacks

The lovely folks at the Vegan Lifestyle Association had been working with the equally lovely folks at Taking the Pea to help promote their newly launched snack line and recently asked if we'd like to give them a go - the answer was a resounding 'yes'. Who doesn't love a snack?

As the name suggests, these are peas - dried, homegrown marrowfat peas, to be precise - which are coated in one of four yummy flavours; sweet chilli salsa, wacky wasabi, smoked ham and cheesy peasy & onion (which aren't vegan so we obviously didn't give those a go.)

Sweet Chilli Salsa flavour were up first. I love sweet chilli, I love salsa, I was destined to enjoy these. They're crunchy and tangy with a little bit of heat and a light touch of tomato. These were my second fave.

Next up we tried the Wacky Wasabi flavour. Andrew had never tried wasabi peas before so it was a whole new world to him. I have tried them once before at a work event where they were the only vegan snack available. Thankfully there was also a free bar to quell the flames.

I liked these too - out of the three they were my least favourite at first (and that's not to say they're bad, I just preferred the other two flavours up front) but the more I eat them, the more I like them. They have quite a bit of heat when you first crunch them, but then you're not left with that burning sensation afterwards which is good.

Plus I love that the packaging tells you how much dancing you have to do to burn off the calories after you've devoured the whole packet. Data I can work with.

Last but by no means least was smoked ham... yes, smoked ham flavour! As with the other two products, the packet is labelled as suitable for vegans, so you can see at a glance that no piggies were harmed in the making of this snack. High-five for clear labelling.

These peas (which recommended 20 minutes of kung-fu) were both mine and Andrew's favourite. They're really flavourful without being overpowering and taste a LOT like Frazzles but without the greasy nastiness.

All-in-all we really enjoyed these. They're all the good things about crisps (flavour, crunch, convenience) with none of the bad bits (higher in protein than crisps, low in fat, low cal). I also love that they come in handy, 40g packs that you can just pop in your handbag for on-the-go snacking.

Taking the Pea has just launched so at the minute you can purchase from their website here or at LOAF on Tottenham Court Road in London.
