Vegan fitness with Bounce Energy Balls*

Bounce Energy Balls cashew & pecan and spirulina & ginseng

It was just over a year ago now that I properly started on my fitness journey. Since switching to a plant-based diet and taking up regular exercise, I have slimmed down from a size 14-16 to a size 10, gone from 'obese' to 'nomal' on the BMI scale and lost almost three stone.

Now I've met - and surpassed - my 'goal' weight, I've got my sights set on the next marker. It's funny how unachievable a goal can seem when you first set it and how euphoric you feel when you finally see that coveted number show up on the scales or slip into that pair of skinny jeans.

On Monday I will be starting a new, eight week programme, the Fitnessblender 8 Week Fat Loss Programme for Busy People. I did the last #FB30 8 week programme way back in April last year and it made such an incredible difference to my weight, my strength, overall fitness and flexibility, so I can't wait to get started on this new version and see the results.

The programme is a mixture of HIIT (high intensity interval training), weight training and cardio, designed to help you burn the maximum amount of fat in the shortest amount of time. Each of the workouts is hosted on YouTube and is 30 minutes or less. All you need is a mat and a set of dumbbells and you don't even need to leave the house to do them so there's really no excuse not to give them a go.

Once you pay the initial payment (which is $9.99 or just over £6), everything else is 100% free. Believe me, these programmes work and are worth much more than £6. That's two cups of coffee. You can of course watch the videos for free anyway but I like knowing what I've got to do each day and which videos are going to really work my butt off - literally. I'll check back in throughout the eight weeks and let you know how I'm getting on.

As I've upped the intensity of my workouts (by trying modified harder versions of the exercises or lifting heavier weights), I've started to think a bit more about what I'm eating before and after my workouts. I usually exercise after work at around 6.30pm, so by that time it's been a few hours since lunch and I'm running low on energy anyway.

To combat this, I've started to have a little something around 5.30 when I'm leaving the office, so by the time I'm home and ready to work out, the snack has digested enough to give me plenty of energy to fuel my session.

The lovely people at Bounce kindly sent me some of their energy balls to try as a Vegan Lifestyle Association blogger and they are the perfect pre-workout snack. Although there are a few different flavours of Bounce energy ball, the cashew & pecan and spirulina & ginseng are two of the vegan-friendly flavours (I think there is a fudgie walnut one which is also SFV).

Both energy balls are super chewy and delicious - the cashew & pecan is definitely a little sweeter than the spirulina & ginseng which I loved but I can imagine the name alone might be a bit too 'out there' for some people's tastes! Fear not - there's no 'grassiness' in sight with these, they have a very clean taste, reminiscent of green tea.

The other nice thing about these is that they're both date-free - so many vegan energy balls or bars rely on dates as a base, which I personally don't mind, but if you hate dates, give one of these a try. And although they contain oats, both of these energy balls are gluten free!

Although they're equally delicious as a filling snack, these really make a difference to my workouts and I can tell when I've had one and when I've forgotten or just picked up a banana instead. I have even had 'Bounce' days when I've finished my specified workout from the plan and gone on to search for another quick HIIT routine to do because I've still got energy to burn! My former couch potato self is pretty proud of me on those days.

As always, although I was sent these to review, this is my honest opinion of Bounce energy balls and I will continue to buy these little orbs of workout fuel. You can purchase these online at the Bounce site or pick them up in most Holland & Barrett stores (at the minute they're on buy one get one half price so stock up!)

What is your favourite pre-workout snack?
