VEGAN TOON - The Bohemian

The Bohemian Newcastle Vegetarian Vegan Restaurant

After a quick stop off at our friend's leaving do, on Friday night, Andrew and I headed to Newcastle's newest vegan and vegetarian restaurant, The Bohemian.

Situated on Pink Lane, just near Central Station, the building itself was one I'd eaten in many times before, having been the Stateside Diner in a previous life.

Boho offers something a little different - a laid back bar vibe with top notch vegan and veggie snacks and meals. The menu is around 80% vegan, with some non-vegan cheese options for the vegetarians. There are no eggs, and certainly no meat, to be found around these parts, which means that all of the cakes are vegan-friendly too. Boho also offers a good selection of cocktails - all of which are vegan.

The Bohemian Newcastle Vegan Nachos

Choosing the first course was hard! Boho offers all of its starters as 'tapas' to pick at if you're just nipping in for a few drinks after work, so there's quite a selection. You can also get three starter / tapas dishes for £10 and buy one get one free on cocktails every Tuesday which is incredible value - the starters are a generous size.

I opted for the vegan nachos which came sprinkled with a delicious vegan cheese, homemade salsa and homemade guac - both of which were divine. Andrew went for the garlic breaded mushrooms and gave me his vegan mayo dip which was promptly scooped up by the remaining nachos. I don't know how they make that stuff but I could seriously smother it on everything.

The garlic mushrooms were also cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, just how a breaded mushroom should be.

The walls of the restaurant are lined with records old and new - a taste of what's to come as the restaurant is due to install a record store in the window so you can pick up a vintage vinyl or two as you sip your vegan cosmo. The other half of the restaurant boasts a striking exposed brick wall, and the mis-matched furniture add to that effortlessly cool vibe.

The Bohemian Newcastle Epic Vegan Chilli Dog

When it came to the main course, there was really only one option - the Epic Vegan Chilli Dog.
Proper hot dog bun. Vegan hot dog. Hearty bean chilli with just a smidgen of heat. Crispy onion rings. Creamy coleslaw. Dressed-to-perfection salad. Mouthwatering skinny fries. Oh my god, this dish has it all! I really could not say a bad thing about it - every mouthful was delicious. If you're looking for real vegan comfort food, look no further.

After devouring all of that we were both suitably stuffed and equally impressed (in fact, I went back the next day for lunch and cocktails with my parents!)

I'll definitely be back at Boho again soon to sample another delight from its extensive menu... that's if I can resist that chilli dog.
