Vegan Afternoon Tea at SIX BALTIC

Vegan afternoon tea Newcastle SIX BALTIC

The day before Mother's Day was our mum's birthday, so me and my sister decided to surprise her by taking her for afternoon tea.

A few weeks back I asked on Twitter if anyone knew of anywhere in Newcastle that served a vegan afternoon tea and it became quite obvious that, whilst there are loads of nice places to have an omni or veggie tea, it's slim pickin's for us vegans.
After many frustrating emails and phone calls to places that I thought would be accommodating, I had a lovely response from SIX restaurant at BALTIC to say they had checked with their pastry chef and we were ON!

It has been a good few years since I've eaten at SIX, and it wasn't at all how I remembered it. The atmosphere was relaxed despite the restaurant bustling with other tables of mums and daughters, all seemingly squeezing in their Mother's Day teas on a Saturday afternoon. We were lucky to have a clear day, and SIX offers up stunning views across both Newcastle and Gateshead, so we were kept busy spotting landmarks before our food arrived.

The drinks selection is excellent, my mum and sister plumping for coffee whilst I went for a tea - narrowing down the wide range of herbal infusions to go for a plain green tea. All of the drinks were refillable.

After about 10 minutes our food was brought to the table, with my vegan selection on its own stand.

The sandwiches were delicate and fresh - one tomato relish, one cucumber, one spinach and hummus and one caramelised onion chutney (which was my favourite.) I enjoyed each of the sandwiches but would have liked more of the sandwiches to have hummus (everything is better with hummus, right?)

Next up, scones. My mum and sister had one cheese and one fruit scone, and I wasn't in the least disappointed to see two fruit ones on my plate. Served with a generous helping of vegan spread and the most indulgent strawberry jam, the scones were that perfect crumbly buttery texture and not overly packed with raisins. Delicious.

Last, but by no means least, the dessert plate. As the waiter explained each of the morsels he must have seen the look on my face as he uttered the words, 'cherry gelatin', swiftly followed by, 'vegan, of course! Don't worry!'. The little pyramid of cherry jelly had the consistency of a jelly baby with the sharp tang of real cherries and a crunch from the granulated sugar coating.
Next up was a raisin slice, packed with oaty granola and vine fruits and drizzled with a rich, dark chocolate.
To follow, a fluffy, moist chocolate cake, and finally, a tangy rhubarb compote with pieces of real rhubarb.

We really enjoyed our afternoon at SIX and would highly recommend it if you're looking to celebrate or just feelin' fancy. The classic tea is priced at £16.95 or you can go for the champagne afternoon tea with a glass of Taittinger Brut NV (which is vegan!) for £24.95.
