Back to Basics - Cruelty Free & Vegan Facial Skincare

Cruelty Free Vegan Skincare UK

When it comes to blogging, it can be really easy to get caught up in the 'sexy' stuff. It's a lot more exciting to try out a new lipstick or eyeshadow palette than it is to talk about mouthwash. But the people need mouthwash!

I've lost count of the amount of times people have messaged me over the past year or so, asking for recommendations for really basic, cruelty free items like shampoo or fake tan. So I've decided to do a 'back to basics' series of posts, highlighting some of the everyday items I use which are cruelty free and vegan. There are obviously loads of other cruelty free brands that are organic, natural etc. These are just the products which I personally use and like, and I've tried to include items that are easy to get your hands on if you live in the UK.

We're starting off with facial skincare today, and over the coming weeks I'll also be covering hair, hands and body, dental products and feminine hygiene. If there's anything in particular you'd like to read about or any products you're struggling with, leave me a comment below or tweet me @teaonthetyne and I'll try and include some options.

First off, when it comes to the basics, Superdrug is your best friend. Before you start splurging, make sure you sign up for one of the Superdrug Health & Beautycards. It's free, you collect points each time you spend, and they often give members free delivery codes which is perfect if there's not a store near you.

Superdrug's own brand products are affordable, well labelled and they work. I cannot recommend them highly enough - even when pit against deluxe beauty brands Superdrug products often outshine their more expensive rivals.

B Clean Melting Gel Cleanser Superdrug Vegan Cruelty Free

B. Clean Melting Gel Cleanser - RRP £6.99 (usually on offer for around £3.50)

No matter how many different cleansers I try, I continuously come back to this one. It starts as a gel in your hands, which you work in to dry skin. On contact with water, this melts into a milk, which glides off the skin leaving no residue. I use this all over my face (even rubbing in to closed eyes to remove eye makeup).
This doesn't dry out my skin, it doesn't leave behind a film, it's not scented or irritating, it just removes makeup and dirt effortlessly. I use this twice a day at the minute, and a tube usually lasts me a month. It's affordable (usually on offer) and just does the job. My favourite everyday cleanser, hands down.

Naturally Radiant Brightening Hot Cloth Cleanser

Naturally Radiant Brightening Hot Cloth Cleanser - RRP £5.99

Before I went vegan I had a mild addiction to Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish. Although it might be cruelty free, Cleanse & Polish is not vegan, as it contains beeswax, as do loads of the other high street dupes. This one (and the Superdrug Vitamin E one) are both beeswax-free and vegan. They're also a really good rival for Liz Earle at a third of the price - in fact, one of my friends recently told me she'd switched and preferred this to C&P after using it for years.

Grown Alchemist Gentle Gel Cleanser - RRP £26.00
REN Clarimatte T-Zone Control Cleansing Gel (Good for oily skin) - RRP £16.00
The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil - RRP £11.00
Soap & Glory Peaches and Clean - RRP £8.00

Faith in Nature Cleansing Wipes

Cleansing wipes are generally full of chemical preservatives which mean they can sit on the shelves for ages and still be 'fresh' when you buy them months down the line. This means they are (generally speaking) not very good for your skin and you probably shouldn't rely on them for your whole skincare regimen.

That being said, sometimes there are nights where I am just too tired (/drunk) to stand and cleanse my skin thoroughly over the sink, or when I'm going to work out and I just want to do a quick first cleanse, and I reach for a makeup wipe. If it's a choice between using a wipe and sleeping in your makeup, go for the wipes every time.

These Faith in Nature ones are really nice. They're soft, lightly scented and remove makeup well. They're paraben and SLS free and contain organic ingredients, as well as being biodegradable. Yes, they're a little more expensive than those horrible cucumber ones you used to get one three-for-two from Boots, but these are 100% vegan and cruelty free (and I'd pay two quid to not have a breakout, thanks).

Naturally Radiant Brightening Eye Cream

As I creep towards ~30~ (argh) I feel it's even more important to start using a decent eye cream. I've been using this Naturally Radiant one for about two months now and it's nice enough, but I suffer with bad dark circles and this doesn't deliver on the brightening front. If you're looking for a light, non-sticky, non-greasy eye cream, this is a good solid bet. It sinks in to the skin quickly and hydrates well, but I just need something a bit more heavy duty.

B. Vitalised Eye Cream - RRP £10.99

Naturally Radiant 2-in-1 Moisturiser & Serum

Naturally Radiant 2-in-1 Moisturiser & Serum - RRP £5.99

When my last day cream came to an end, I decided to try this 2-in-1 moisturiser / serum combo as we approach the warmer months. My skin is very changeable depending upon the season and in winter I really have to ramp up the moisturiser as my skin does dry out. In the spring, I like to go for a lighter option, and this moisturiser / serum is a really nice product.

Light in texture and not at all sticky, the cream sinks in to my skin in seconds, leaving a soft, smooth base for applying foundation. This is actually very similar in consistency to the Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer - very light and easy to apply. I also like that this comes with a pump, so you're not plunging your fingers into a tub or pot which can encourage the growth of bacteria.

Grown Alchemist Hydra-Repair Day Cream - RRP £29.00
Green People Vita Min Fix - RRP £16.50
Sukin Facial Moisturiser - RRP £8.49
Naturally Radiant Renewing Night Cream - £5.99

Let me know if there's anything else you want me to cover in this basics series, and if you have any favourite cruelty free / vegan facial skincare products I haven't mentioned above - I'm always on the lookout for new things to trial!
