Back to Basics - Cruelty Free & Vegan Feminine Hygiene

Cruelty free feminine hygiene tampons razors

The second installment in my back to basics series is about feminine hygiene. Most of you lovely people are of the female variety anyway, but obviously if you are a man type, this post contains tampons and stuff so, y'know. Maybe move on to another post.

RAZORS

Superdrug Women's Triple Blade System Razor

Razors were not something I really thought about when I went cruelty free. It never really occurred to me that a razor wouldn't be vegan, but actually it was really tricky to find something suitable, particularly on the high street.

Many of the big brands you most commonly see - like Gillette - test their products on animals, making them neither vegan nor cruelty free. So it's back to trusty old Superdrug, who came up trumps with this Triple Blade System Razor. The razor has one of those lubricating strips (another thing to look out for when choosing a vegan razor), but it's marked as suitable for vegans. Yey! It also comes with four sets of blades for under £3 which makes it a total bargain.

SHAVING GEL

Superdrug Shaving Gel for Normal Skin

Superdrug Shaving Gel - RRP £2.85

I usually don't bother buying a separate shaving gel, instead I tend to use a good shower gel or conditioner, but in the interests of this post I picked up this gel from Superdrug. I've used it once and I can't say it made a noticeable difference in terms of the closeness or comfort of my shave, but it did make my legs feel smooth and soft afterwards.

The one thing I really didn't like about this was the scent. It's labelled as a floral fresh fragrance but to me it smells very chemically and not floral or fresh at all. That being said, it's also labelled as vegan and cruelty free, and the scent is a really small factor in comparison.

TAMPONS

Veeda Natural Cotton Tampons

***TMI alert!*** About three years ago, I started to get really uncomfortable, quite severe bacterial and yeast infections on a monthly basis, coupled with itching and sometimes even blistered skin. I felt as though I was constantly in pain, going backwards and forwards to the doctors and trying every medicine and cream under the sun to get rid of the infections. After about three months, it dawned on me that I would only get these symptoms around the time of my period. A quick Google and I realised I was not alone, and that there were loads of other women who were experiencing the same things as me, and the reason? They - we - were experiencing severe allergic reactions to mainstream brand sanitary products.

I immediately switched from my usual brand - Always - to a 100% organic cotton product and I have not had a single problem since. My skin is not sensitive and I don't really have any other allergies, but these products did NOT agree with me, and it's not hard to see why; they are coated in chemicals, bleach, perfumes and plastics (see more). It's actually quite frightening to think that I used such chemical-laden products in such an intimate area for years not knowing how bad they could be for me.

This is of course my personal experience and many women will use mainstream brands for years without experiencing any problems. But I will never recommend something on my blog which I don't wholeheartedly agree with, and I can not agree with anything other than 100% organic cotton products like these tampons from Veeda.

Veeda is a relatively new brand in the UK, but their ethos is clear and simple - provide the best products for our health and the environment in the most ethical possible way. The products themselves are well packaged and excellent quality, they're also super affordable and available in selected Boots stores as well as online at Veeda's website.

SANITARY TOWELS

Veeda Natural Cotton Towels

As well as tampons, Veeda also makes sanitary towels, which they kindly sent me to try. They are soft, absorbent and thin, unlike some other towels which can be uncomfortably thick and padded. I've had no problems whatsoever with the Veeda products, which is always a worry when switching to a new brand following my past experiences, but knowing these are 100% natural cotton is a big relief. These are also cheaper than the brands I have used in the past, so I'll definitely continue to pick these up in future.

Gift Wellness Sanitary Towels

I've included these sanitary towels by Gift Wellness in here as they were the first 'anti-allergy' towels I could find when I first switched. They are slightly more expensive than the Veeda ones, and they're not 100% cotton, but they're a good option if you can't get your hands on anything else.

OTHER GOOD VEGAN / CRUELTY FREE OPTIONS:

Cottons Ultra Thin Pads - RRP £1.99

Of course when it comes to sanitary products there are also reusable towels and menstrual cups, neither of which I've used or have any experience with, but they are cruelty free and vegan options:

Earthwise Pads Mixed Bundle - RRP £10.50
Mooncup - RRP £20.00

Hope you are finding these 'back to basics' posts useful - let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see! Haircare, hand and body and dental basics still to come.

  2. Wow, that's so frightening that mainstream branded tampons are coated in all that nasty stuff!
I've never suffered an allergic reaction but regardless that is not something I want to subject my body to.
I expected the natural ones to be noticeably more expensive but they look the same price wise to the mainstream brands.

I'll definitely be looking into the brands you mentioned.
    Very informative and helpful post!

  3. I actually don't dread going to the dentist! I have never had an unpleasant visit in all of the years I have been a patient. I still have my veneers the dentist Manhattan Beach did for me several years ago and they still look great!
